One thing I love about U.K. magazines is that they occasionally give me presents. My keychain is a light-blue heart from Aspinal of London that I got with an issue of Tatler a while back. This month, while in London, I picked up an issue of Elle that came with a Paul & Joe Sister ruffle-sleeve t-shirt. There was even a choice of four colors. I pondered the army green but went for my usual black.
If U.S. fashion magazines started giving me gifts, I would forgive them for putting celebrities on the cover instead of models. I miss the good old days of beautiful covers that weren’t pimping someone’s new movie … but I can be bought.

I will never forgive them for whoring celebrities on the front of magazines. I hate buying a magazine with a celebrity I despise on the cover; it somehow implies tacit approval. Bring back the anonymous models!

Agree! They should do the same here. They don’t even give out those totes they promise giving away for free if you subscribe x years or so. =(
PS – happy anniversary to you and Mr. B!

Oh! I love the UK mags too! It’s been a while but I went to Barnes & Noble one day and they had about 4 fashion mags with the gifts. I grabbed all of them like an idiot. I got 2 tote bags, a sparkly headband, and I forget what else. So much fun! The mags were great too!

I so agree about the lack of models on fashion magazines. Remember Kim Alexis? I thought she was so glamorous.

i would spend so long trying to decide which magazine to buy-not for the content of the magazine but for the best gift!

The free swag was the only thing that kept me from being disgruntled about the exorbitant mag prices in Australia when I lived there. It is kind of fun.
But given the choice, I’d much rather have our dirt cheap U.S. prices ($3.95 per issue, year-long subscriptions for $8?!) and be able to have every mag on the rack, than pay double and have to ration—and rationalize—my mag purchases weekly and monthly.

I lived abroad for three years, the last year of which I was in England. When I saw all the magazines giveaways over there I figured it was the new global trend in magazine publishing; something to stimulate the sagging industry amid the recession. Boy was I disappointed when I returned to the U.S and there weren’t any prizes in the magazines…I also once scored a Paul & Joe Sister top out of a UK magazine. I still love it and wear it.

I know! Whenever I go to the UK I’m overwhelmed by the magazine choices and the awesome freebies attached. Japanese magazines also do it too. Somebody should give a hint to the editors over here, maybe it would save the publishing industry from going under.

I totally agree on the actress magazine covers. They annoy me. Always. Not to mention the huge editorials devoted to them, with hopelessly uninteresting interviews attached. zzzz…..

i miss when covers were strictly about models too!

Asian magazines also give out freebies. It seems only the US doesn’t participate. Probably for liability reasons…

UK mags are the best for freebies. Does mean I spend a fortune on them, though. I too can be bought it seems (and it’s so much easier to justify when you get a gift worth £10).

That shirt is adorable. I haven’t purchased a magazine in-store in ages… and no it’s not because I own an iPad, either. What do you think about this whole iPad magazine app trend, anyway? xx
