Because I’m a jewelry designer, you might think my eyes would be on awards-show jewelry to the exclusion of everything else fashion-related, right? You’d be wrong! While I admire the big-time red-carpet jewelry, it doesn’t often surprise me. We all know Harry Winston can provide a breathtaking diamond necklace. Big juicy emeralds are bound to be from Lorraine Schwartz. That’s why it often takes something unexpected — like Whoopi Goldberg’s bold octopus piece by Sevan at last year’s Oscars — to get me really excited about awards-show jewelry.
Last night’s Screen Actors Guild awards were different: I was focused on the jewels. Viola Davis — who won her fifth SAG for the movie Fences — looked glorious in a strapless Vivienne Westwood gown, but her Nirav Modi necklace made the big statement. (It makes sense that I was attracted to a necklace by a designer who isn’t a constant on the red carpet.)
Octavia Spencer — a member of the award-winning cast for the movie Hidden Figures — wore a black Tadashi Shoji gown that was enlivened by her Jacob & Co. turquoise earrings …
… and bold ring.
My Best Dressed/Wear What You Want award goes to Danielle Brooks from the Netflix show Orange Is the New Black for the Gabriel & Co. NY hair jewelry adorning her towering updo.
As a bonus, Brooks was wearing a Christian Siriano pantsuit with a train. I’m a major fan of unexpected pants on the red carpet. Pants are also comfortable when you’re exuberantly celebrating your cast’s award for outstanding ensemble in a comedy series.
I’ll give an honorable clothing mention to 18-year-old Annalise Basso, from the movie Captain Fantastic, for striking THIS pose in her Bibhu Mohapatra dress.
I just hope she didn’t fly too close to the sun right after this photo was taken.
Among the men, Mahershala Ali from the movie Moonlight was dashing in his white Ermenegildo Zegna Couture tux with a navy bowtie.
Many passionate speeches last night took on the current political and social climate. Ali gave one of the best when he won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Worth watching if you missed it!

I really need to see Moonlight, Fences and Captain Fantastic. I already have a date to see Hidden Figures. Did you see Hell or High Water? Whoaaaa, that movie was amazing. Deep social commentary on debt and guns and rural america, and not in a condescending liberal way. It was so real and so true. It’s a year in which I am much more motivated to see the movie nominees because they actually represent more of what I see as an American experience. Do you watch Luke Cage? I can’t remember if you have mentioned it. But damn, that show is amazing. Whatever episode in season 2 (I think) that has the intro by Jidenna, you should see if you haven’t. Ok Wendy, talk to you later. PS, I called both my senators, my representative, my state house rep and my governor today. I’m not stopping at Women’s March!!

The only thing I’ve seen on this list is Moonlight! I’m so behind. Maybe I’ll be able to go this weekend.
Good job making phone calls. I applaud you!

Cosign on “Hell or High Water” — the best movie I saw in 2016. (And I’ve seen many of the Oscar nominees.)

I just told MrB that we’ve got to get to it!
