Laura Mvula is a British singer/songwriter whose debut album, Sing to the Moon, reached the top 10 in the U.K. charts. She was just nominated for four of the U.K.’s MOBO music awards; that ceremony will take place in Glasgow next month.
Last night, she performed in New York at Le Poisson Rouge, the same place where I saw Skylar Grey, and a great venue for getting up close and personal with an artist.
The audience was so in love with Laura that she couldn’t help but smile through a sad song. (She has a lot of sad songs and said at one point, “I swear I had a happy childhood!”) I particularly like the less-sad “Green Garden.”
Laura is performing on The Late Show With David Letterman tonight, so tune into CBS to see her. If you’re one of the people horrified by Miley Cyrus’s MTV Video Music Awards act, you should make a special point of watching Laura Mvula, because this is the kind of talented, mature, fully-clothed artist that folks claim doesn’t exist anymore. Give her your support!
Here’s what I wore to the concert last night. I was in a post-Labor-Day white mood.
What Wendy Wore
Boob-cloud top: JC de Castelbajac (2009)
Jeans: Acne (2007)
Shoes: JC de Castelbajac (2009)
Watch: G-Shock from the Shock the World concert gift bag (2013)
Necklace: My own Memento Mori design
The other thing on my wrist, next to the watch, is the “I’m old enough to buy drinks” wristband from the venue. After the bouncer checked my driver’s license, he said, “I never would have guessed! Keep doing what you’re doing.” So I’m going to keep drinking a lot of white wine and eating a lot of Cadbury Dairy Milk. I guess it’s working for me.

So that’s what I’ve been doing wrong, I often drink RED wine with my chocolate. Damn!
Such a fun outfit, and now I need to watch Laura’s video. But are you sure her name isn’t Mulva?
WendyB says
OMG, Val! Stacy and I have been saying “Mulva” for weeks! BWAH!

Oh boo I miss passing by Le Poisson Rouge, now I’m nostalgic for my old neighbourhood and so glad its still there & not gotten pushed out by some designer like the rest of Bleecker St… so many interesting shops & restaurants gone ): Damn I hate white wine (except the bubbly!), its red wine or bourbon for me… I think you may be on to something! Glad you had a fun night out! XXX
WendyB says
Yeah, it’s a great place — I’m keeping an eye on their calendar of events.

Boob cloud top is rocking my world.
I don’t much like Laura Mvula but Green Garden is a beautifully mesmerising song. Love the video too.
