I suffered a relapse of my cold after the big Food & Wine shoot on Saturday, so it was back to bed for me until Tuesday, when gorgeous blogger Tricia of Fashion Herald coaxed me out for the fashion-show launch of MNG by Mango for JCPenney. I will do anything for Tricia! As a bonus, Janelle Monae performed. Her style is as awesome as her voice. She was wearing her signature black and white, right down to her black-and-white wingtips.
I wore a Balenciaga dress I got in the spring. I love this dress in person, but hate it in photos. I am somewhat consoled by the fact that a young man parked himself by me during Janelle Monae’s performance to tell me that he liked my “hot curves” in the dress. (I waved him off with my wedding band before Tricia could give him the beatdown; she was poised to defend me from any mashers. ) His enthusiasm is the only reason I’m sharing this photo. And, yes, MrB knows all about this.
What Wendy Wore
Dress: Balenciaga (2010)
Shoes: Prada (2010)
Ring: My own Xenobia design
Lip Color: MAC’s Lasting Lust. I would have preferred to wear Morange. I recently ordered that one.
It was good to see other gorgeous bloggers, including Yuli, Midtown Girl and Tamron from Fashion Binge.
That day, gorgeous blogger Jennine of The Coveted was winging her way to New York so she couldn’t join us at the event. I saw her on Wednesday. She took this picture as I was on my way to sell scrap gold on behalf of some customers. Gold is at yet another high (I’ll have a separate post on that soon) and several clients who have been waiting to redesign unworn jewelry are selling the old stuff now and putting the money into new looks.
What Wendy Wore
Leather Jacket: Christian Dior (2008)
Jeans: Acne (2009)
Bag: Louis Vuitton Alma in Epi (2001)
Sunglasses: Roberto Cavalli (2001)
Unseen Shoes: Michael Kors clogs (last seen here)
Lip color: Guess!
Jewelry: Boleyn necklace (hidden)
I got that jacket two years ago at Mrs. Sting’s yard sale in London and wore it for the first time last week. This is my year for wearing all the pieces I got at that sale: the lace Dolce & Gabbana coat, the red Zac Posen gown and now the jacket. All things in due time!
The jacket’s color makes me think of the leather jackets worn on the 1970s television show, Starsky & Hutch.
I put off wearing this jacket because I wasn’t sure what went with it. Finally, I decided that the black top and jeans combo that I wear nearly every day went just fine. Now that I’m thinking of Starsky & Hutch, I remember that I had a mad crush on David Soul (Hutch) in the ’70s. I even liked his song.
In the early ’80s, Elizabeth, the wife of Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky) was infected with AIDS through a blood infusion she had during the birth of her daughter Ariel. Unaware she was ill, Elizabeth passed the disease to Ariel through her breast milk. Her son, Jake, contracted the disease in utero. Ariel died in 1988, after which Elizabeth started the Pediatric AIDS Foundation to help develop treatments for children with HIV and AIDS. Elizabeth died in 1994, and the foundation was renamed the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in her honor. Thanks in part to the foundation’s efforts, Jake is alive and well.

Damn, I never know where these outfit posts are going to lead. See? I told you that fashion is not superficial!
UPDATED TO ADD: Should I be embarrassed or proud? Grant Miller Media has done a tribute to my meandering outfit posts. Fuck it, I’m going with proud.

The Starsky and Hutch reference is hilarious, and I never knew about Elizabeth Glaser’s situation with AIDS and all. Great post.

No idea why you don’t like pictures of you in that dress! You look great!
Love that jacket too! The bf has been wanting the Fight Club leather jacket from Soul Revolver for forever. I think I will reward his weight loss with it! The 70s style is THE BEST!

Arm Baby’s coming over! Ha, just kidding. I was going to go on and on about how much I hate my hair until I saw you in Mrs. Sting’s jacket, it’s gorgeous on you! And you know the “do anything” thing is 100% mutual.
Rosie says
I love the colour of your jacket! I feel like it would be really great with lime green.

love the jacket, wendy…and love even more how you connected your post back to the pediatric aids foundation.
btw, i was obsessed with that starsky sweater awhile back and found some fascinating information on the art behind that knit-style. it’s from the cowichan indian tribe of the pacific northwest and is part of an incredible crafting tradition. more here in case you’re interested! http://knitlit.blogspot.com/search?q=cowichan
have a great day 🙂

Holy, I love Janelle Monae – she is awesome (and I know she was wearing the black and white saddle shoes, right?). ‘Tightrope” is a wicked song.
How have you not worn that jacket before? It’s a neutral! It goes with everything!

Wendy, you always circle back to the things that are truly important. But back to the clothes: you do look great in both ensembles!

Wow where do I start. I am shocked as I didn’t know the Elizabeth Glazer story.
Your event sounded cool and a bit of flattery is good for the soul. You looked great. Xxxx

You are so gorgeous in that Dior jacket! That sale was the best blog fodder ever. And I remember the Glaser tragedy. How horrible that was. And how fortunate that times are getting better for those with HIV.

You look absolutely splendid in everything here. Morange would have been superb with that Balenciaga dress, I agree.
The jacket you got from Mrs. Sting is perfect with what you have on. I can see how that color might have thrown you off, but you really worked it well.
Lovely!

I’ve been wearing a maroon leather coat again for the fall, glad you think they’re hip (I’ve been struggling with it’s coolness factor).
Iñaki says
D.I.E. !!!!!!! That Balenciaga dress was one of my favourites from the collection and it looks so much better on you than it did on the runway!
