I’m jumping the gun on April’s Jewel of the Month because Easter is coming and I’ve got the perfect Easter gift for you. Forget about baskets stuffed with delicious Jelly Belly jelly beans, scrumptious Cadbury Eggs and indestructible Peeps. My petite, sterling silver Chicken on Nest necklace is much cuter and less caloric.  This is the same chicken that is in my bigger, more complex “hen in the egg” piece. The new necklace is $150. If you’re in the U.S. and order now, you can have it in time for Easter. (International orders will take longer.)

I don’t do many mechanical pieces in silver, so this is a rare opportunity. Here are two pictures of the necklace. Seriously, y’all, this is ONE necklace shown two ways. I often show two photos of a single mechanical piece — a locket, for example — both open and closed and people say, “Nice necklaces!” plural.

Here is the chicken closed.

Chicken on Nest necklace, closed.

If you pull down gently on the chicken’s nest, you can peek in and see her three 18K-gold-plated eggs. This is where you say, “Awwwwww!”

Chicken on Nest necklace, open.

Like the Teeny Genie, this is a itty-bitty piece. The chicken is smaller than a dime — less than 1/2 inch tall. The standard chain is 16 inches, but you can request a different length. Let me know at wbjewelry at hotmail dot com.

You don’t have to observe Easter to wear an adorable chicken necklace. It can be your “I eat chicken soup with Matzoh balls on Passover” or “I am not religious but have a high regard for barnyard fowl” necklace.

Or you can buy it to cheer me up. While gorgeous blogger Jennine was staying with me during New York Fashion Week in February, I told her about my greatest ambition: to create a Peep diorama for the Washington Post’s annual contest. Originally, I planned to enlist her help. Then we got busy with other things. After she left, I planned to do it on my own. I even bought my Peeps, but I have a little procrastination problem and the March 11 deadline was soooo far away. Then on March 2, I realized that the ad I’d torn out of the paper said the deadline was March 1. Dang! Not only did I miss an opportunity to share my Peep genius with the world — I need glasses too! I’m not the only one who had a Peep-trastrophe this year, but that’s small consolation. Next year Peep artists everywhere better brace for WendyB!

My point is that whether you’re celebrating a holiday, have a passion for poultry or want to contribute to next year’s Peep fund, you should buy a Chicken on Nest necklace. Click here!

  16. You, my friend, create jewelry that deals with the big philosophical issues( I LOVE that about you). Never before have I seen jewelry that answers the question: “What comes first, the chicken or the egg?” It seems the answer is both. LOVE it!!! You are a genius.

  29. Man, I forgot about the annual Peeps contest! Always reminds me of a friend who would only eat her peeps stale – they had to be sitting out for a couple days, but a week was best.

  30. Alicia says:

WendyB…you HAVE to do a Peep diorama. I would, but I live too far away to enter. You must be my “by proxy.”

And oddly enough, dudeguy has been reading to me from Lucian’s True History and there is a portion that talks about “salad fowl.” I think the necklace could somehow celebrate that even though this hen doesn’t have lettuce for wings.

  31. Lynette says:

Your talent knows no bounds, WendyB. That’s the truth!

  32. Seriously, another work Wendy Brandes genius. Every time I see one of your mechanical pieces, all I can do is gape and wonder, “how does she do it?!?!” You are putting the rest of us jewelry designers to shame!
