OMG! It’s my gorgeous sister Terri Berry‘s birthday today! In honor of Terri’s birthday falling on a Throwback Thursday, one of her favorite photos. It’s from July 1987. Terri took — and still takes! — great pride in the big hair she achieved that day. In the ’80s, we were all about “bigger is better”…

Wanderlust 2014: My First, But Not Last, Trip to Greece
While traveling in Europe last month, I did some things that I’d wanted to do for decades. I visited Liverpool, which I first dreamed of doing in 1980. I’m glad Mark Lewisohn, the author of Tune In, the 2013 book about the Beatles that prompted me to finally take the trip, saw that I credited…
For Doors Stans: Pamela Courson’s Mother Has Died
I like to look over the obituaries in the print edition of the New York Times — there are a lot of interesting stories there. Today, I couldn’t help noticing this beautiful face in the paid death notices section. Figuring this lady had to have been an actress, I glanced at the information: died aged…
The Big 13
My designing friend Zang Toi says his lucky number is 13. I am going to adopt that policy, at least for a year, because today marks the 13th wedding anniversary for MrB and me. We’re traveling today, so we celebrated early, with friends, in the town of Fiskado on the Greek island of Kefalonia. Thanks…
Looking Back: Mother and Daughter
As you can see, red lipstick runs in the family: BarbaraB and Nan on Aug. 1, 1996.
Ruth Kay: 1918 – 2014
My mother’s mother, Ruth Kay, died last night. She was 95 years old. Her grandchildren called her “Nanny” when they were young, then “Nan.” Her three great-grandchildren knew her as “G.G.” for “great-grandma.” Nan’s husband, Sam, aka “Papa,” died of a heart attack in 1983. Papa died just a few weeks before my 16th birthday….
Photobomb Level: Expert
Everyone else I know can give up on photobombing. My gorgeous sister Terri Berry is the all-time champion. From now on, this move should be known as the Terri bomb. For “level: expert” memes, click here. For more highlarious photobombs, click here.
Throwback Thursday: Maternal Great-Grandparents
My gorgeous mother, BarbaraB, recently gave me two undated photos of her grandparents (my great-grandparents), William and Sadie Weiss. The Weisses were from Budapest, Hungary. Later, they lived with my mother’s family in Brooklyn. Sadie died when she was 64. Then my mother’s family moved to a different house, and William came along and lived…
Happy Mother’s Day, Plus the Week in Review
Happy Mother’s Day to my gorgeous mother, BarbaraB, and all the other mothers out there, including pet mothers and mothers of dragons. In case you missed it, here’s what I posted this week on the blog. Monday: Reminiscing about the Costume Institute galas of the 1990s, and my best-dressed choices for this year’s Met Gala. Tuesday:…
The Weeks in Review
The past two weeks have been wild around here! The big news was the announcement that the Columbia Daily Spectator — the undergraduate newspaper of my alma mater, Columbia University — would focus on its website, while reducing its printing schedule from five times a week to once a week. As the chairman of the…
