Isn’t it perfect that my December 23 birthday coincides with Festivus, which calls for the airing of grievances? I’m sure you have plenty of grievances this year. Click here to air your grievances! Anyway, people always tell me I should lie about my age, but I prefer to be straightforward, so here’s the truth: If I lose one pound of my COVID-19 weight gain per year, I *might* be able to wear the dress I wore for my 40th and 50th birthdays on my 60th. Slow-fashion goals!
Of course, I don’t have to worry about dressing for a lavish celebration mid-pandemic, so right now I’m wearing the same pair of 2016 baggy Madewell jeans that I’ve been wearing almost daily since February. I find them much more comfortable than leggings, so I’m rather concerned that they’re dissolving, as you can see from the photos below.
To keep my spirits up today, I’m watching dancer James B. Whiteside on loop …
… and enjoying the books that my gorgeous sister Terri Berry (not her real last name) sent me. I haven’t been able to concentrate on any serious reading in a long time: The fourth Elena Ferrante book has been sitting on my nightstand, halfway finished, for about two years now. I only have the capacity to take in my favorite Instagram comic artists, and I’ve been meaning to get all their books to show my appreciation for the free entertainment. So, when Terri asked me what I wanted, I requested Happiness Is a State of Mind, the Buni collection by Ryan Pagelow; War and Peas by Jonathan Kunz and Elizabeth Pich; the Visual Hug books by Wawawiwa artist AndrĂ©s J. Colmenares; and the Strange Planet books by Nathan W. Pyle. Give all the artists a follow, and if you love their work as much as I do, support smaller businesses by buying their books from Indiebound rather than the evil empire of Jeff Bezos.
Another small business to support is mine! Use the discount code THISIS53 during checkout on wendybrandes.com to get 35% (see what I did there?) off any jewelry purchase over $100. If you’re a 1stdibs.com shopper, holla at me via the site and I’ll match that discount for purchases there. Few things make me as happy as seeing my jewelry designs being worn!
Getting yourself a Wendy Brandes Jewelry gift would be like giving me a gift at the same time: We both win! The discount code is active through New Year’s Eve.
