Happy Halloween From Bananarama

If my Halloween costumes continue to be predictors of future trends, prepare yourself for the comeback of massively teased hair. I’ve always loved ’80s pop trio Bananarama …

… so I recruited my gorgeous friends Kara and Stacy to dress up as the group for an early Halloween celebration on Saturday. We hit all the key Bananarama styles including the hair, pegged jeans, paperbag waists, cropped sweatshirts, and striped tops. My overalls and boxing boots were inspired by 1984’s “Cruel Summer” video.

Even though Bananarama wasn’t known for jewelry, I accessorized with some of my early 1980s pieces, including mismatched earrings …

… and colorful bracelets.

My hair was pretty big by today’s standards, but it would have been unacceptably limp to me in the mid-’80s. Back then, I didn’t go out without hair that wasn’t windproof and waterproof thanks to massive amounts of hairspray.

The costume idea came first, then we found a party to match. Sadly, the 1980s-themed Culture Club has closed, but a great ’80s cover band called Jessie’s Girl plays at Le Poisson Rouge on Saturday nights. They had amazing costume changes. I should have taken a photo of “Dee Snyder” from Twisted Sister, because the extreme makeup and pink fringed jacket were spot-on. At least you can kind of see “Axl Rose’s” long hair and bandana here.

We appreciated the tribute to the late Pete Burns of Dead or Alive.

I HIGHLY recommend Jessie’s Girl if you’re into 1980s music. I only had one complaint about their performances on Saturday — there was no Bananarama!
