Let’s celebrate the first day of summer with this July 1989 Vogue UK cover, featuring model Carre Otis. The photographer was the great Herb Ritts.
This picture makes me want to see more beautiful, non-celebrity magazine covers again. It also makes me want to go on vacation!
Mary Panjari says
Gorgeous! You should see the weather today in Melbourne town, it’s fucking stupidly cold and wet. At least it’s the shortest day so from now on it gets better. I agree, sick of celebutards/celebunothings on the cover of Vogue. More models please!
Eli says
We’ve had like 5 warm days in SF! It’s absolutely ridiculous. I never signed up for this weather, I could have moved to Seattle for this. Although, I’m thankful that I’m not in Vegas anymore, they’re already at 100 plus weather
Vix says
What I’d give for some sunshine and a dip in the ocean night now! That’s a fab picture, wasn’t she married to Mickey Rourke and in that film, Wild Orchid? x
Penny Dreadful Vintage says
So with you, back with the models!
tina m says
Houston is a miserable pit right now–Texas is experiencing a drought–fires are burning everywhere–With the humidity, it’s been over 100 effing degrees everyday!
I used to love Carre Otis! I remember when she was with Mickey Rourke and that they had a crazy, volatile relationship!
I just got a copy of “Unzipped” from Netflix–I am going to relive the 90s when models were everywhere!
Madeleine Gallay says
That was a great, perverse love affair. Mickey spent two years on a magnificent house with workmen sleeping on the floor and a secret room with cameras to spy on his love. He lost the house before his batcave sort of place was finished, a place underground to store his motorcycles and come roaring up and out. He was devastatingly handsome and cool then. Summertime and angels .. Here in Venice Beach, we are honky tonk on the summer boardwalk.
Alice Olive says
Agreed, that’s beautiful. Simple and stunning.
Jane says
Girl. Preach it. I miss covers with models!
The Style Crone says
Thank you for reminding me that today is the first day of summer! That is truly something to celebrate.
Patti @ NotDeadYet Style says
What a beautiful photo! It doesn’t look dated at all. It’s been summer here in FL for a long time so I forgot the date too.
mariel says
It also makes me wish they wouldn’t crowd the covers with 100 taglines about Gwyneth’s favorite recipes and finding the perfect swim suit for your body. Good photography (and quality content within) will lure the reader; Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar should reevaluate.
WendyB says
Very good point!
stacy says
I couldn’t agree more!

Hi my dear-a stunning cover, I want to be where she is!! xx
Style Eyes says
Yes I definitely think I could do with some sunshine now. That water looks so lovely
Rubiatonta says
If I didn’t know that I’d be likely to freeze solid in our still chilly New England waters, I’d be off to the beach right now, on the strength of that photo alone.
As in so many other areas where less used to be more, those who design magazine covers seem to think that an intriguing image isn’t enough.
Natalie of Fashion Intel says
I too definitely miss the old magazine covers, oh, and the bods.
Ofelia says
Herb Ritts was an amazing photographer and it’s nice to remember when models were size 4-6 and not -0.
stacy says
She was so gorgeous. Still is.
THE-LOUDMOUTH says
Sidenote: She does kinda look like Rhona Mitra, who is an actress.
But, yes. Great cover!
brett says
