In a recent article in the New York Times, etiquette expert Letitia Baldridge said of white lies, “I never would have gotten through life without them.” She’s consistent. Twenty years ago, she said, “A white lie is permissible for kindness’ sake.”
Fleetwood Mac agrees, as do I.
“Tell me lies. Tell me sweet little lies.”
The Thompson Twins, who say lies are “gonna get you,” foolishly lump white lies in with big, bad lies. But this is such a good song, I can’t leave it out.
“Lies, lies, lies, yeah.”

ahh wendy, the subway in new york is horrible it’s the most difficult i’ve used ever! It took us a couple of days of gettign lost and confused before we got use to it, what a time waster. I think you definitely need to study it before you just hop on it. As for the safety you are right, it didn’t appear too bad and it was always packed anyway 😉
I know they are necessary but I get so tired of petty bs and empty social rituals based on the belied that we must lie, lie lie. That’s why I love five year olds, no guile: “Your hair looks FUNNY.”
Fuck 5 year olds. One of them once told me I was wearing too much lipstick. Did I come back and tell her mother that the child was FAR too fat for a kid her age, and way too old to be running around the house throwing the almonds that had been put out for the guests? No. It would have been damn true but there are times you better not speak the truth.
I don’t see how we can get through life without telling a few white lies . . . not without crushing people in our wake, anyway.
I can think of a few gifts I’ve gotten which didn’t suit me, but the suitedness was far outweighed by the caring gesture the giver made, and protecting the feelings of the giver.
I adore Leticia Baldrige. Devoured her book “A Lady, First,” and happily read whatever pronouncements she has to make.
