How many times have I heard women moan that they can’t wear maxi dresses or skirts? Too many. If you can wear a floor-length wedding, prom or evening gown — and anyone can, no matter what her height — that means you can wear floor-length, period. It just has to be the right cut to flatter your body. Sure, if you throw on a tent, it’s going to look bad. But that’s like putting on the worst pair of jeans you can find and saying, “I can’t wear jeans.”
I’ve heard so many women say they’d NEVER wear a maxi that my Never is the Next New Thing™ radar has been on high alert. And I found enough fashionable bloggers wearing maxis that I feel I’ve been proved right. I have a slideshow of these lovely ladies on The Huffington Post. Check them out and leave them some kind comments!

I’m wearing a maxi dress right now (part of my summer dress/skirt challenge) and I could not be more comfy!

It’s such a brilliant point about prom/wedding dresses! You are so right about it – every girl wore something like this at least once! Never thought about long skirts/dresses this way before, but you totally opened my eyes! x

Hmm. Maybe I won’t hem that super-long Eileen Fisher linen dress after all.

At least try it on and show us a picture first!

I have yet to wear the Banana Republic silk floral maxi I got from a media preview. Waiting for sunnier weather so I can rock it with open-toed shoes!

Couldn’t agree more – get the proportions right and anyone can wear one.
For Those About To Shop says
I’m so vain I don’t wear maxi dresses because my legs are my best asset and I don’t want to cover them up! They do look so comfortable, feminine and chic so maybe this year I’ll give them a go.
WendyB says
That’s an acceptable reason not to wear them…of course, if you try one, you may realize you have another “best asset” that is now highlighted!

I liked the reference to shorting stocks!

I love your jeans analogy! I’ve never understood the apprehension around maxi dresses/skirts. They make such a strong (and awesome) fashion statement.

omg you wrote for huffington! I love maxi skirts.

I love (some) maxi dresses – but honestly, I stepped all over my wedding dress… so I opt for the knee length dresses and save myself from many possible faceplants.

Wendy, your “Never is the next new thing” quote is never far from my mind when I shop. Recently I tried on some palazzo pants — a former ‘never’ for me — mainly because I knew you’d advocate it. The particular pair didn’t quite work, but they were far better than expected, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I ended up owning a pair at some point. It’s good to surprise yourself sometimes!

Hey Wendy,
I’m a freak for a maxi dress or maxi skirt. I can’t get enough of this fashion trend. I think it can be elegant or easy breezy. It just depends on the accessories.
Enjoyed your entry on this!

I’ve been itching to get a good maxi skirt for work lately, now I have to wear lady clothing to the office, so thanks miss B! No reason work gear HAS to be boring, right? I have long legs so maxis work pretty well on me without shortening me any. Now to decide WHAT KIND to get and the best shoes to accompany…. Something with a little funk I think.

I used to think I couldn’t wear them also. I haven’t found the right one yet but I’m definitely looking! 🙂
K-Line says
You’re so right, of course. It’s all about the proportion. I have an empire cut A line maxi (horror for the hourglass woman with big boobs) but the proportions make it all work…

I used to think that my height was never cut for the maxi dress and skirt, till I finally gave them a try. I’m now transformed :D! Worn with the right accompaniments they actually make you look lankier and slimmer. I even wore them when I was pregnant and very round.

I loved that post. I’m really into my maxi skirts and dress right now. It’s nothing to do with my mood!

Thank you!

Loved the ‘maxi show’ and have to say that I never stopped wearing them.
