As I’ve said many times, Joan Jett has been a hair icon for me for over 30 years.
Four years ago, Yolandi Vi$$er and her extreme mullet were added to my list of hair muses.
I don’t think I’m ready to give up my own mullet hairstyle, especially now that I’ve perfected my “runaway bride in the Greg Kihn Band’s ‘Jeopardy’ video” look.
Still, I occasionally ponder what cut would be compelling enough for me to depart from a mullet, and I decided it would have to be a severe bob, like the one cut by Karen Vu that I spotted today.
Alert reader Sarah Savage pointed out the resemblance to the signature look of iconic New York fashion writer Lynn Yeager.
And that makes total sense because I’ve been a fan of Lynn’s distinctive style for decades. Literally, they don’t make them like her anymore: Modern, corporate New York City doesn’t generate die-hard eccentrics like it used to, so she’s a treasure.
The Lynn connection makes a change — someday — much more compelling. But don’t expect to see me with red hair! The only dye job I’ll consider is gray. I’ve got my eye on colorist Jack Martin who will dye a whole head of hair gray to match the natural grays.

Severe bobs can be fun but do require constant upkeep – I’m sure you’re no stranger to that! I am glad that I figured out how to transition my own white grow-out from deep purple to lavender to my white/grey – it’s all natural except for 2 inches at the end now! It’s kinda freaky – I haven’t NOT coloured my hair since I was 17!
Emmylou Harris was an inspiration for me, Joan Jett’s rock & roll shag too!

True, and probably I’ll never give up the mullet because it has a Look while still being something where I don’t have to stress out about cuts. When I had a pixie, the maintenance drove me absolutely crazy, because I’m particular about who cuts my hair and he’s hard to get appointments with! I love what you did with your color! I was plucking the white hair until recently, and then I got excited about a gray dye job so let them grow in and …I have a lot more than I did but not enough to dye without serious maintenance.
