My “Never Is the Next New Thing™” fashion rule states that the most provocative/grating/startling looks — the ones that make you say, “I would NEVER wear that!” — are the ones most likely to become trends, big or small.
A corollary to “Never Is the Next New Thing™” is that after you fall for a look you once loathed, you develop fashion amnesia and can’t remember life before. In fact, I only recently learned I had “Never Is the Next New Thing™”-ed myself when it comes to my mullet haircut! Another blog post took me back to a July 2011 story I did for the Huffington Post about high/low — aka mullet — hemlines for dresses. I was all over the trend when it came to dresses, but, I declared, “Mullet hairstyles are still cringe-worthy.”
When I re-read that, I was like …
… because by 2014, I was showing off a mullet cut by my hair guru, Keith Carpenter.
I’ve stuck with the style ever since. Here’s the spring 2019 iteration.
I even did a YouTube video about how much I love my mullet ‘do.
So now I’m cringing over my 2011 use of “cringe-worthy. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. Take my advice and never say never when it comes to fashion!

What a fun walk-back through all your hairstyles – that is hilarious that you NITNNT’d yourself on the mullets! It is a great style on you!
And here I’ve been trying to get my slightly wavy hair to be MORE wavy – I’ll trade you!
