April’s Jewel of the Month is a custom ring I created for gorgeous client Laura in honor of her 50th birthday. Fun fact: This was the first time I ever took apart one of my existing designs to use a gem for a customer’s ring. Say goodbye to my original 18K gold Fulvia ring …

My Fulvia ring in 18K yellow gold with a 6.5 carat tourmaline.
… and hello to Laura’s new platinum design!

Same tourmaline, refaceted, and set in platinum with diamonds.
You can see pictures of the redesign in progress in my new YouTube video, where I also explain what Laura was looking for and how we ended up choosing to use this particular gem.
One note: I don’t know why I kept saying the tourmaline was 6 carats in the video; it was 6.5 carats! Now it’s a smidge below that because I had it recut slightly to improve the color and brilliance. Anyway, happy birthday again to Laura. I love what this ring symbolizes to her and I was honored to make it.
If you have a request for a custom design, holla at me at info at wendybrandes dot com.
Wendy, the redesign is stunning, although I think the Fulvia was gorgeous as well. Laura is a very lucky woman.
Thank you, I was always fond of the Fulvia myself! But I love Laura’s ring even more — it all feels like it was meant to be.
Also, refining the facets on the tourmaline really brought it to life!
