In 2016, I introduced my “No Class” signet ring, originally requested as a custom order by singer/songwriter Skylar Grey. Skylar wanted a serious-looking class ring … minus the class. So, where the school crest would normally go, we put a heraldic-appearing “No Class.” Skylar chose two extracurricular activities to adorn the sides, just like a student might have a favorite sport on his or her ring. Of course, in this case, one of the activities is rated NC-17. To take the no-classiness to the next level, I selected a famously obscene line from a Roman poem known as Catullus 16 for our “school’s” Latin motto. Read the translation AT YOUR OWN RISK. (If you already know Latin, I will assume you’re already on the floor laughing.)
I decided this was too funny to be a one-off piece, so I’ve done several customized No Class rings since then. The one I did for myself in 18K yellow gold has a middle finger emoji on one side and a New York City rat on the other.
My most recent No Class ring is January’s Jewel of the Month. This 18K yellow gold ring was a graduation gift for a handsome fellow named Jacob. The top of the ring was my standard design, complete with the Catullus 16 line. (My advice: When people inquire about the Latin, never EVER give them the translation. The name of the poem and an innocent look are your best bet.)
The thoughtful gift-giver, Kelsey, requested three “extracurricular” activities for Jacob. The “sign of the horns” emoji hand is something I’ve done as earrings. On the ring, we had more room to play with so we added radiating lines.
Jacob is also passionate about dogs and cigars, but there are only two sides on the ring. The solution? A dachshund smoking a cigar.
When it comes to jewelry, I’ve got a way to cope with every challenge!
I’m told Jacob was thrilled with his ring. A big thank you goes out to Kelsey for requesting the fun job. And if you want your own No Class ring, holla at me at info at wendybrandes dot com. Whether your “sport” is sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll, animals, or an actual athletic activity … I have an open mind.
