So how ’bout them Golden Globes? Lady Gaga — considered a lock for best actress for A Star Is Born — saw the award go to a very surprised Glenn Close for The Wife. Then major awards went to two much-criticized and controversial movies, The Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody.
In other words, it was the kind of Golden Globes ceremony after which we have to say, “Oh, that wacky Hollywood Foreign Press Association! Remember Pia Zadora?”
At least it was a good night for fashion. I announced Janelle Monae and Lady Gaga as my Best Dressed/Wear What You Want winners last night and remain satisfied with my belated “It’s a tie!” update. Here’s the best of the rest.
So many men killed it last night. I swear, ever since Pharrell’s giant hat won the 2014 Grammys, an increasing number of guys have been throwing sartorial caution to the wind. There were two in particular who might have won my big prize if Janelle and Gaga hadn’t had such strong looks, and they are my top runners-up in the “Wear What You Want” division.
Cody Fern from the television show American Horror Story, wowed me in head-to-toe Maison Margiela, including a shirt with a sheer panel and Margiela’s iconic split-toe Tabi boots. The finishing touch? A smoky eye. He’s my second-runner up.
My first runner-up is Billy Porter from Pose. Designer Randi Rahm spent six months working on an ensemble worthy of representing the show about New York City’s 1980s drag ball scene.
Three additional honorable mentions go out to women whose dresses gave me a warrior vibe, which seems appropriate in our current political and social climate. Regina King wore a custom Alberta Ferretti dress that looked bad-ass despite its pink sequins.
I was impressed by the leather bodice of Michelle Yeoh’s emerald-green dress — a good match for the emerald ring from her movie Crazy Rich Asians. It turns out that was her personal ring all along!.
The mesh sleeves under the cape detail of Olivia Colman’s gown made me think of chainmail under a suit of armor.
I’m delighted to present my Judith Light Award for Fierce Posing to …
… Judith Light, of course! Seriously, if Judith is on the red carpet, ain’t no one going to out-fierce her, not even the cast members of Pose.
And finally, I’ve got to give a shout-out to the photobombing “Fiji Water girl” who got more screen time than anyone and became a trending topic on Twitter. That was model Kelleth Cuthbert holding a tray of bottled water and serving FACE behind every celebrity.
FYI: I have already written 200 pages of the Fiji Water girl's inner monologue tonight pic.twitter.com/2VvMGRJPW4
