I’m a sucker for a top hat …
… and I love a mullet outfit almost as much as I love a mullet hairstyle …
… so I appreciated Amy Sherman-Palladino’s look at tonight’s Emmy awards.
I also appreciated that the creator of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel made Emmy-award history, winning for both comedy writing and comedy directing — the first artist to do that with a television pilot, and the first woman to do so in the 70 years the Emmys have been around. The show also won the awards for best lead actress (Rachel Brosnahan), best supporting actress (Alex Borstein), and best comedy series. With all those awards, I figure Sherman-Palladino will be okay with not receiving my prestigious and totally made up Best Dressed/Wear What You Want award despite her compelling top hat/mullet combo.
Instead, my award goes to Leslie Jones, who has developed a great working relationship with designer Christian Siriano over the past two years. Tonight’s cleavage-flaunting, iridescent suit is his best look for her yet.
My Best Dressed/Wear What You Want award doesn’t require that a look be “beautiful,” or “flattering,” or in any way acceptable to the vast majority of people. “Eye-catching” is more important. Of course, if an outfit is eye-catching and beautiful at the same time, even better, and Leslie and Christian did that. This was just such a great and unexpected fabric to use in a pantsuit — I can’t imagine it having as much impact as a dress. And how fun is it to see a pantsuit that’s not striving for a tux look. Well done!
My runner-up is Tatiana Maslany in a asymmetric (kind of like a sideways mullet?) pantsuit/dress.
I dig DayGlo colors, so that yellow is doing it for me. Yellow was a big trend overall, just as it was at the 2016 Emmys. The in-your-face color was also worn by the winner of my special Judith Light Award for Fierce Posing who is …
… none other than Judith Light herself. I’ll take the suspense out of this for future posts: If Judith Light is on the red carpet, she’s going to win her own award. I swear, if anyone out-poses Judith at a Judith-attended event, I’ll eat my top hat and maybe Amy Sherman-Palladino’s too.
Actually, I’m starting to feel bad for Amy because not only have I just threatened her hat, but I’m not even going to give her my Best Accessory Award. Oh wait, she won all those Emmys. Never mind. I don’t feel bad at all as I bestow this honor on activist Sarah Sophie Flicker for the flowers in her hair and the anti-Kavanaugh message on her well-toned arm.

A fitting look for a Women’s March organizer! I like her Instagram too.
Flicker is married to Jesse Peretz, who was up for an Emmy for directing GLOW, a show I’ve become a big fan of as I’ve been semi-binge-watching it for the past week or so. I highly recommend it. Peretz, by the way, used to be a member of the band the Lemonheads. I think I have a crush on both Flicker and Peretz after seeing this 14th wedding anniversary photo taken by their daughter.
Now THAT’S couples #goals.
