Thank you to Brittany Siminitz of JCK for interviewing me about social media! Check out my top tip for people starting out; advice for dealing with plagiarism; and my favorite jewelry and non-jewelry Instagram accounts.
After I did this interview, an unusual online kerfuffle broke out in the jewelry industry. I won’t get into the details, but I will offer an additional piece of advice: Remember that all social media is potentially public. You can make your accounts private, but anyone who does have viewing permission can take a screenshot of your posts and share them publicly. Voilà! So, if you’re going to say something about people in your industry, assume it will be seen and anticipate the consequences. Blowing the whistle on bad behavior might be worth causing an uproar. Making a snarky remark? Dang! That’s what talking to people in real life is for.
