Commercials that I love have included Mayhem for Allstate, Eminem for Chrysler and Brisk, Little Richard for Geico, the Android Smartphone crown jewels ad, and the recent Mob Wives promo. Despite my devotion to Family Guy, I wasn’t crazy about the Wheat Thins commercial I just saw that simply copies the show’s famous “Cool Whip” routine — that’s so lazy!
Family Guy characters don’t do a lot of ads, so I hate to see them doing a boring one. The promos for Eminem’s Relapse album a couple of years ago were much funnier: “Are you a gay baby?”
But the ad that I really dislike is for the antidepressant Abilify. In the commercial, “depression” is represented by a blue robe that looks like the skin of Cookie Monster.

The robe of depression.
After the depressed lady takes the medication, she’s no longer wearing the Cookie Monster robe, but the robe doesn’t take the rejection well, so it stalks her. Here it is sulking nearby while she hangs out with her family.
Who wants to take a drug that lifts your depression but then lets it lurk an arm’s length away from you? I feel like it’s just waiting … waiting to fling itself around the lady again. It’s as sad as seeing Cookie Monster in rehab!
I remember having to transcribe those adverts and make photoboards out of the videos… good times. Transcribing the fine print was always a pain. Yeah.
That said, it can be worse. BEHOLD!!! The Volt Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvwTMZNWGuk
It’s the eyes on it that keep jumping around…burn it lady!
And they wonder why people with depression won’t seek treatment. After the long list of warnings, that damn blue robe is still hanging around. “If you don’t take your Abilify you’ll be wearing me soon again”.
I’m with you! Get this ad off TV.
Ack, just realized you already said what I thought. Really need better reading glasses!
LOL! I call it the blue bathrobe of death.
Imagine wearing it while staring at the blue screen of death on your computer. Serious suicide risk there.
I think you touched on the real dynamic of medicating depression. It just gets pushed aside, never really gone. Always lurking. Thanks for saying what we all thought.
I saw the Wheat Thins ad last night too! Hilarious. I hate the Abilify commercial. I think there’s an air of legal liability in there… like it won’t cure you completely so don’t get your hopes up. Geesh.
That’s EXACTLY what this ad says to me…”don’t get your hopes up.” That’s not a very cheering message!
wow .. I haven’t seen that abilify commercial. It just seems creepy. Way creepy.
