I’ve resisted getting reading glasses for a couple of years even though it’s getting increasingly difficult to see up close. I can see far away just fine. For a while, my rule was, “As long as I can still read a restaurant menu by holding it at arm’s length, I’m okay.” Then I had to adjust to the rule to, “As long as I can read a restaurant menu after someone walks over to the other side of the restaurant and holds it up, I’m okay.”
Occasionally, when I encounter over-the-counter reading glasses in a store, I’ll try them on, marvel at how well they work, and put them back on the display. Yesterday, I was doing my usual “try on the glasses with no intention of buying them” routine. But then I looked at the Cleves swan ring that I was wearing.
First, I thought, “Holy shit! I’ve never gotten a good look at this before.” Then I thought, “Oh my God! This ring is AMAZING! I am so talented!” I felt full of self-esteem. Next came the crash, as I wondered, “Why am I not winning many awards for my outstanding work?!” I became bitter, and it was in a bitter mood that I bought the glasses. MrB tried to console me by saying, “You’re mostly going to wear them at home. No one is going to have to see them.” I said, “But I have to post them on my blog.” Reasonably, he asked, “Why do you have to do that?” Well, because I don’t have any other post ready to go. That’s why!
Here I am, pretending I’m not bitter.
MrB said that the problem with reading glasses is that they tend to get lost. I can’t wait!
Aki! says
You look great in glasses. A lot of people have a lot of objections… but most of the time, glasses don’t look bad!
WendyB says
I just don’t like the idea of age-related eye changes. Ugh!
Julia, the Thanksgiving Girl says
LOL at waiting for them to get lost! But hey, yours look cute!! And I love your hair in this picture 🙂
WendyB says
Thanks, lady! I’ve been wondering if I should cut it…or grow it MUCH longer. Decisions, decisions.
Megan Mae says
Don’t feel bad, my mom has to wear reading glasses WITH her super powered contacts. I have a feeling I’ll be at that point sooner or later because I can no longer see as well through my current glasses. But hey the greatest thing about reading glasses is you can buy crazy-awesome ones for insanely cheap! My mom has at least 4 pairs in all sorts of shapes and crazy-levels.
WendyB says
I’ve always had 20/20 vision. This is a big aggravation!
niki says
you look very cute in those stylish frames, i wouldn’t fret too much =)
WendyB says
Thanks, but don’t expect to see any more pictures of this look! This is the first and last glasses photo!
lisa says
Well, look on the bright side. At least your gorgeous smile masks the bitterness and pain!
WendyB says
I’m so good at faking it. You should see the crazy pictures I have of me smiling during the worst moments of my life.
Tanvi says
I was gonna say the exact same thing! (: You look good in them. Really!
Kelsi says
I love you Wendy. I really do. You’re ridiculous in the best kind of way. (that’s sincerely a compliment) Also it’s been a year since we first met 😉
Come back to L.A soon dear 😉
Kxx
WendyB says
I passed through very briefly over the weekend but didn’t get to see anyone 🙁
I hope to come back in July!
Mary says
Do not despair, I wear reading glasses too! I’ve got some lovely Miu Miu frames so that’s some consolation. Once I hit my mid 40s, my eyesight deteriorated. This is normal. Anyway, I only need them to read when in dim light…..sort of.
WendyB says
Why do things have to remind me of my age? Do not want.
Mary says
I ask self the same question. Fuck that, you look fabulous!
mystyle says
Hi my dear-don’t lose them, you look too cute!!
Penny Dreadful Vintage says
I felt the same way when I got my first filling. My teeth would never be perfect again! Mind you I have felt that way about my bubbly thighs for a LONG time. DAMN YOU AGEING!!!
WendyB says
Oh, dude, I have so many fillings. I felt bad about my first root canal though!
Bella Q says
I think you look smashing in them. but then again, I need reading glasses.
Enjoy the menu.
Maja Piraja says
I think they look cute on you! And hey, if you do decide to post more pictures of yourself wearing glasses, you might get a whole bunch of new readers – I had no idea there were so many men with a glasses fetish out there until I had to wear glasses myself.
Might not be your most wanted target audience, though 😉
Lynn says
I dig this. I had my first filling done at 31 and that made me sad for 3 days. And now at 37 I’m starting to hold anything I read farther away than my usual 1-foot distance – it’s killing me. I do occasionally ponder on Lasik, and have heard mad, raving reviews from friends who have done it, only it costs me a BOMB, so here I am resenting myself again!
So my lady, maybe a Lasik for you?
Any Second Now says
You look fantastic, lady! I need new ones myself. Funny about the posting of the wearing of the glasses. Instant content! 🙂

Coco's Tea Party says
They really suit you. I’m short sighted but never wear my glasses. It means that people always look amazingly attractive from far away and when they get closer I’m usually a bit disappointed.
the nyanzi report says
you look chic and what a beautiful smile you’ve got! do not despair.
Samantha@Fashionbidtv.com says
Ha @ Maja Piraya’s comments!
Your glasses honestly look great on you!
I have terrible vision so I wear contact lens all the time and glasses very occasionally. I’ve tried lots of different styles of glasses, I’ve needed them or contact lens since I was 12.
My current OK-ish glasses are great looking, BIG and bold (and chanel) but I don’t like the way I look in them. I feel like a different person and not very “me”.
You honestly look great in yours, so try to embrace the glasses look! 🙂 xxxxxxxx
Poochie says
i had to get glasses for some night driving a while back but then my vision improved a bit. I don’t need readers yet (I’m right behind you agewise)! My peeve with glasses isn’t how I look but rather the way your periferal vision breaks at the edges. It always made me a bit dizzy.
But no cavities yet either, thank goodness. That’s what I really dread.
Leah says
LOVE the glasses on you! Looks great.
xo L.
Alice Olive says
I think frames are a stylish addition to any fabulous woman. You look even more fabulous!
Dale Fournier says
I think they look smashing!
deja pseu says
As a fellow bespectacled gal, welcome to the club! You look great!!!
Vix says
I feel your pain, I had some a few weeks ago. Yours look cute. xxx
Jim B says
I wouldn’t worry Wendy, it’s impossible for you to look bad wearing anything. Just to let you know, those of us that have been in the club for a while keep multiple pairs around so they are always within reach, it’s only a matter of time.
young at heart says
cute…very cute…sort of sexy librarian….I went out with someone who was short sighted and i’m long sighted, he read the menu I read the specials board…..
Madeleine Gallay says
the ring is amazing …
and your smile.
Lara says
You’re “trying not to look bitter face” is priceless… love the specs but yeah, I hate wearing mine too, even though the bf loves them. (Sexay librarian fantasies I guess.)
GRIT & GLAMOUR says
Yes, that ring is amazing, and yes, you are talented! And you know what else? You look sex-ay in those glasses, and that’s no joke.
Mr. B’s verbal consolation was right and admirable, though I think another big honkin’ Prada bag as a consolation would distract you nicely.
Sally says
Oh psh. You look FABULOUS in those specs! No need for bitterness, lady.
Lee Oliveira says
You do look super cute in glasses.. the frame is beautiful
Ps.. drooling all over this ring.. black diamond!! nice touch

Ofelia says
You look so cute and hot-librarian-like!
I was in denial of my less than perfect reading vision until I got some stylish D&G and Versus reading glasses that were almost all paid by my insurance! So now I don’t mind facing the realities of the written words.
Rebecca says
Those glasses look great on you. Of course they have to go on the blog!
Tina says
They look great. Just think of them as a new fashion accessory!
MJ says
Those glasses look fabulous!! Honey, I’m blind as a bat when I don’t have my contacts in and at home I’m always sporting my glasses.
As for your talent, I saw your work on Beautifully Invisible’s site and let me tell you, your work speaks to accessory addicts like me! That ring up there is stunning!! Keep doing your thing girl!
Cara says
Pish Posh – don\’t think of them as glasses think of them as accessories. My face always feels so naked when I finally stop being lazy and put in my contacts and I spend my bus rides to work dreaming of what kind of frames I want next!
KT says
Wendy, as a chick who spends 40 hours a week finding the right glasses for people I have to say you look great.
Proof positive that boys do make passes at girls in glasses.
jennine says
the glasses make you look smarter! haha, you already looked smart. 🙂
drollgirl says
your glasses are fab! seeing is FAB, so embrace the change. and glasses can be a SUPER accessory, but sometimes i find it is tricky to find the right balance of jewelry and glasses. jewelry is my favorite thing ever (practically), but on the rare occasion that i wear glasses in public i tend to tone down the jewelry a lot. just too much going on with it all. ya know. or maybe not. lol
have a fab weekend!
elena daciuk says
i know…not what you want to hear…but they look great on you…
i remember what a hard time i had buying my first pair…which i still have…but really…i should have more…one for my purse…one for upstairs…one for downstairs…but…alas…i’m still fighting it…
it’s those “age-related” little changes we fight…even though they help you see better…haha…
K-Line says
Plz – you are GORGEOUS in those glasses. I am an expert. You can believe me.
miss cavendish says
I like them! I just visited the eye doctor and learned that I have the same sight line 🙂
Kirstin Marie says
You look great in your glasses! I’ve been wearing glasses for a few years now, and it’s not that bad. 🙂
That's Not My Age says
You look fantastic in glasses – and now that you can see properly your jewellery’s going to look better than ever!
Fashion Addict says
I think you look lovely in glasses and you really shouldn’t let anyone make you feel weird in them!!!!
Jill says
I’ll admit I need them as well, but I’ve found that I can typically waylay someone else to read the menu for me…and those poor souls are usually wearing “readers”. The art of persuasion!
And yes, you do deserve many accolades for your incredible designs.
stacy says
You are perfectly suited for glasses!!!! They look great and I think you should wear them all the time. And I’m picturing Thelma from Scooby Doo… crawling around on all fours looking for her specs!
xo
Audi says
Aw, the glasses look great! Interestingly, a reader recently told me that some glasses would boost my style quotient (and also my nerd cred), and suggested that if I happened to be cursed with 20/20 vision, I ought to devote several days to eye-straining activities in order to improve my chances of needing specs. And here you didn’t even have to try!
Susan Tiner says
Ha! I’ve just come to the point of view that age rocks! Mr. B is so right about glasses always getting lost. You look fabulous in the glasses and not a bit bitter.
Terri says
You look lovely in the reading glasses! I broke down and bought a pair in a thrift store this week…and I’m very happy with them. I can afford to loose them.
The Styley says
The glasses are very chic–although I understand the annoyance of age-related changes. I’m worried that my eyesight (I’ve always had 20/20 vision too) is starting to go, which is a slight problem for the whole photography thing.
Lynette says
WendyB, you look quite wonderful in this photo. The reading glasses do not detract from your smile or the happy gleam in your eye. Honest. You look successful and happy, not the least bit bitter.
