Madame Rose, Eva Peron … Kathie Lee Gifford? Yes, Kathie Lee, the preternaturally perky talk-show host, is, like those other ambitious ladies, the subject of her very own musical. She Can’t Believe She Said That! (subtitled The Rise and Fall and Fall and Rise of Kathie Lee Gifford nee Epstein) is the highlariously demented brain child of Matt Prager, a South Park writer. Broadway actress Heather Laws pulls out all the stops while singing lines like “I used to be a Jew … now I’m Christian-er than you.” With clever choreography and staging, this is definitely a must-see.
Because bloggers often request suggestions for things to do while in New York, I decided I would do the occasional post on the topic, especially if the activity or place is off the beaten path. This musical is in a tiny little theater on the third floor of a building on West 36th Street, so it’s not the kind of thing you’d normally stumble upon. If you’re in town this week, I highly recommend catching this. The show will be performed tomorrow at 4:30 PM, Saturday at 4:30 PM and Sunday at 1 PM. Tickets are available here for $20.
Weird note: Someone I know is namechecked as one of Kathie Lee’s pre-Frank boyfriends!
That sounds fun. If I would ever go to New York, I might go and see it, but it probably wouldn’t be on anymore then, haha…
Now THAT’S a musical I might even be able to convince my husband to see. Those South Parkers can write a song like nobody biz, as the SP movie proved.
Just the idea of a South Park writer being involved has me laughing already. Wish I had business in NYC.
Too bad I’m so far away. This sounds like just the ticket.
Are you going to spill the name?
ENC: Nope!
We have some really talented guys here in Australia who have been doing quirky musicals about unlikely people. They did “Keating the Musical” about a former prime minister, and “Shane Warne the Musical” about a bogan cricket star.
So funny, so I can imagine how this Kathy Lee one would be too.
I’m actually looking into running away from home. maybe I could move in with you, get a job at a major financial institution and check out the play!
ok, I’m sold. now, how to get there?
Is suze already sleeping on the couch?
That sounds fantastic. However, it would break my streak of not going outside.
HA! Sounds amazing.
That sounds like a kick-ass musical…I’m too broke to got to NYC so I must stowaway in a suitcase bound for the big apple – I’m small and just need a few air holes!
Oh my lord, wonders will never cease. Hilarious!
I hope you have fun
tell us how it goes
I do find kathy’s voice a bit painful though…
That sounds fantastic. I was already wanting to visit NYC and then you go and push me over the edge. Is the soundtrack available? I must have it!!
interesting weird note.
i have often dreamed *sigh* of visiting new york and going to a play or musical. i think it would be wonderful. this one sounds funny.
oooh i wish we had time to see a broadway show while we were in NYC… next time! and me and the hubby just love watching musicals..
Ha! That sounds like it could be pretty funny.
if you are going to new york, how can you be bored/not know what to do? its new york! the city that never sleeps… i wish i was there to see this. i hear southpark and its already a winner in my books.
I think this is one of those hilarious shows that I would go to see
I’ll be sure to bother you when I fly up there. (if you allow me)
Hi there-It must be so great being in the heart of New York-the play sounds very funny!
What a great idea for a new regular feature! I’d still love to meet up with you when I’m in town btw. 🙂
Lisa, I would be delighted!
Wendy, I miss living in New York so much! I go every year and CRAM in a show every single day! I will ring you up next time I come to say hi!
Sounds great. It’s nice to hear about little known shows. `Cheers Wendy!
kathie lee earned that musical, dammit! i’m dragging my husband and running to theatre asap.
