I am amused by the “Thoughtful Tote” from Takashimaya.
The description includes this: “After years of use, simply mail it in and the company will reconfigure it for you. ” This does provoke quite a lot of thought, especially because I’m not clear on who the manufacturer is. Do you find out only after you buy the tote for $350? Are we sure that company will still be in business after “years of use”? How do we define “years of use”? What if I had buyer’s remorse about buying a tote and wanted it reconfigured into a clutch after mere weeks of use? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi wendy-for that sort of money, you want it working for you for a long time-like you say, will the company still be there, years down the line!!

the company in question may be takashimaya itself, since it does sell products under its ‘house-brand’…

Haha that’s hilarious– I like the bag though: it’s really simple and it’s nice to see that “green” fashion is in.

I like the bag too, but for $350, I’d want something more special. I don’t think that’s too much to spend on a really fine bag, but I don’t get any more excited looking at this than I would looking at a canvas tote.
WendyB says
Raq, my guess initially that it was the store itself, but since they didn’t say so explicitly, I didn’t assume.
CDP, yes, it does look like a canvas tote, doesn’t it! That’s why I would recycle it into a clutch.

the suggestion of reconfiguration makes me think it’s unworthy in its present state. and i’m not patient enough to wait for years. with handbags, there is no patience.

Good questions, all. And, in what way would they reconfigure it?

As someone who writes software manuals for a living, I’m intrigued by their choice of verb: “reconfigure.”
Sal says
Do you think you could get it reconfigured into a pair of sandals? Or a belt? Or both?! Maybe it depends how trashed it is “after years of use.”
pistols at dawn says
I bet the answer to that mystery and many others is inside the bag.

haha the company will reconfigure it for you? uhh. odd.
Savvy Gal says
reconfigure?? i am imagining that they will change the strap or something. anyway, after years of using the tote, i would just want to buy a new one.

That’s a great concept, but what if I use it for 10 years and the manufacturer no longer exists? It’s still a fantastic idea, though. I wish Prada would do that – I have a bag that’s falling apart and would like “reconfigured.”
fashion herald says
a great point, “reconfigure” is a dangerous word in this crowd.

Still better than H&M’s motto – after a few months just chuck it and buy a new one.
