Musical Men in Red Pants at the VMAs

August 29, 2011 by WendyB

I first noticed the new popularity of red pants at the Independent Fashion Bloggers conference in February. Soon they were on so many bloggers that I put a red-pants slideshow together for the Huffington Post. At that point, I remembered that I’d grown up watching male rockers on MTV jumping around in tight red pants. Now things seem to have come full circle, and, once again, red pants are the uniform of choice for dudes in the music business. I noticed them at Lollapalooza earlier this month, they were well-represented at last night’s MTV VMAs by a variety of guys. Wearing the look were teenybopper panty-wetter Justin Bieber …

The Biebs got bonus fashion-trend points. Take another look at his picture and you’ll see he’s clutching his pet snake (named “Johnson,” he said). So that’s the snakeskin trend. And his gal pal, Selena Gomez, wore a mullet dress.

Nice fashion-trend hat-trick, Bieber. In recognition of your efforts, I’ll refrain from commenting on the glasses and gold chains.

He called his snake Johnson? That’s rather Freudian and phallic!

Johnson, really? And he takes it with him everywhere and wraps it around his hand? Arrrrrgh.

I know, I think I threw up a little. Though the librarian glasses might have caused that too.

Yikes, even I know that the librarian glasses are not cool!

OMG, the “Biebs” rocking TWO trends at once!
And his GF in a third! It’s too much to process!

    Love red pants though!

Please comment on the chains and glasses, he needs to hear the truth. His overall look is very androgynous, but not in a good way. Above the shoulders he’s a very busy mom who doesn’t like fuss or frills. Down below though he’s a young 20s douche-y scenester wearing his gf’s blazer. Honestly though, I really like his le smoking jacket.

I can’t possibly say it better than you just did. You get an A+!

most of your never say never trends have required a double take for me to appreciate them
(given red pants were never never say never.) but I’ve always like mullet dresses. In fact, typically prefer long dresses tapered at least a little bit in the front. Its strange to see all this emphasis on a style I’ve always thought perfectly natural???

I always feel lots of things are around for years, then suddenly they have a Big Moment. I mean, how many times have leopard print and red lips suddenly been “in,” while I’ve never stopped wearing them? It’s amusing.

I do love red pants but Bieber’s seem to be saggy in all the wrong places.

Hey you forgot Bieb’s leopard/ocelot print shoes. More bonuses for him 🙂
