I found an amusing boutique while visiting my gorgeous sister, Terri Berry, and the rest of the Berry family in Tampa, Fla. Milagros for Body & Soul sells Saint Agnes Soap, which the website homepage describes as “the finest handmade glycerin soaps from the world’s cleanest nun made available to saints & sinners everywhere from Milagros.”

The soap isn’t really made by a nun, of course, but by “a bunch of clean-living, fun-loving women.” Saint Agnes, the patron saint of girls, was “adopted … as our patron saint since women make our soap.” Naming soap after a historical figure? That was right up my alley.

The soap is made in big loaves and you can buy an inch-thick slice for about $8. The soap comes in many different fragrances. I’m not usually a fragrance person, but I went crazy for the cute soap designs. The lovely ladies in the store were happy to let me take photos (click photos to enlarge).

The Flower Power soap was the one that drew me into the store. I saw it through the open door.

I was very tempted by the Honeysuckle soap, both for the fragrance and the association with history.

Giving a bar of soap a new meaning: the martini, Appletini and Cosmopolitan soaps.

The soap named Aunt Helen’s Back Yard had my favorite back story, which you can read in the photo below.

Some of my jewelry gets named the same way. I come up with the design first and rely on serendipity to find me a name.

“Milagro,” by the way, is Spanish for “miracle,” and “milagros” are religious charms. The store sells the charms. The charms also decorate crosses that adorn the walls, alongside Sacred Hearts and the occasional portrait of Frida Kahlo.

I wound up getting the Cucumber Melon soap, described as “the perfect summer blend of cool cucumber & juicy watermelon. A fun-filled summer picnic for your tub!” I made Max (the Berry family’s Pekingese) pose with my slice when we got home.

You can buy your own Saint Agnes soap online here. Happy shopping!

These soaps remind me of soem that were at the Craft fair I went to over the weekend. I got a half a bar of Mango Madness (I think it was called). The other half went to my mum.

The soaps are so cute and well-done, seeing them was almost a religious experience. This staunch liquid-soap girl might convert to bar soap!
